What is an overdraft?

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough available funds in your account to cover a transaction. Depending on the type of transaction, you have options to prevent returns or denied transactions:

  • ACH or Share Drafts: Austin FCU gives members until 3pm CST on the day the payment is presented to us to make a deposit or transfer to cover the transaction and avoid a return. You can also enroll in Overdraft Protection or Courtesy Pay to ensure those items are paid. Fees may apply depending on the service.
  • Debit/ATM Card: These items will generally be denied at the point of sale if funds are not available. You can enroll in Overdraft Protection or Courtesy Pay to prevent those denials.

Overdraft Services:

Overdraft Protection

Protect yourself against overdrafts or denied transactions by linking two or more Austin FCU accounts (checking, savings, or line of credit) to your checking account. When an overdraft occurs, or your card is swiped when funds are not available, a transfer will be made from the linked account automatically, in increments of $50 to cover the amounts.

Members with our E-Checking, Student Checking or Legacy Checking accounts enjoy this service with no fees. With any other accounts a $4 fee is charged for each transfer that occurs.

To enroll, give us a call or send a secure message via online banking letting our MSRs know which accounts you’d like to have linked.

Courtesy pay

Make sure your transactions go through, even if there aren’t enough funds in your account, with Courtesy Pay. Opt-in is required for this service, and you must meet certain eligibility requirements to be able to enroll. The maximum overdraft limit allowed to members who opt in to the Courtesy Pay program is $200.00. Higher limits may be available to qualified members.

There is a $33 fee for each ACH, share draft or one-time debit card transaction covered by Courtesy Pay. For members wishing to withdraw funds at an ATM, the fee is $45.
